🌹A Step Back in Time: The Cardinal’s Room. Tucked

🌹A Step Back in Time: The Cardinal’s Room.

Tucked within Ugbrooke is a room rich in history and intrigue — once home to Thomas Weld, later Cardinal Weld, one of the most fascinating figures in the estate’s story.

Born in 1773, the eldest of fifteen children, Weld’s life took remarkable turns — from family man to priest, to Bishop, and finally receiving his red hat from Pope Pius VIII in 1830.

Today, his legacy lingers in every corner of the room.

✨ An 18th-century apothecary’s cabinet, complete with brass handles and original glass bottles.
✨ A leather-bound trunk that once carried the Cardinal’s church plate (now at Buckfast Abbey).
✨ A magnificent George III four-poster bed and an intricate 19th-century Boulle writing table inlaid with tortoiseshell and brass.

It’s a room woven with faith, family and enduring heritage.

🌳 3,000 acres of timeless landscape. At Ugbrooke,

🌳 3,000 acres of timeless landscape.

At Ugbrooke, nature was shaped by one of the great landscape designers of the 18th century. Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown transformed the estate by damming the Ug Brook to create two sweeping lakes, then carefully planting trees to craft the “natural” views we still enjoy today.

English Oak, Turkey Oak, Spanish Chestnut and Holm Oak were all chosen to frame the house in rolling parkland, winding woodland paths and peaceful water.

A fernery, walled gardens, enchanting walks and wide open skies — all part of a 3,000-acre vision that, centuries later, remains beautifully intact.

Today, the Clifford family continue to plant and care for the landscape according to Brown’s plans.
