by Brendan Rawlings of

Zen Wood Design

Ugbrooke House & Gardens are delighted to showcase a selection of sculptures by Brendan Rawlings for a second year.

The organisers at Ugbrooke are keen to support the Arts and are excited to make the sculpture trail bigger and better in 2025.

Brendan Rawlings is a driftwood artist from Woodbury in Devon.

He began his journey into art in January 2019 when he crafted a driftwood shark for his brother-in-law. After uploading the image to Facebook, he quickly garnered 20+ commissions, leading to the birth of Zen Wood Design. Brendan immediately transitioned to full-time work and has not looked back since.

He exclusively uses reclaimed or drift/fall wood in his artwork and woodworking projects, ensuring sustainability by making monthly donations to a leading UK charity dedicated to planting trees.

Brendan firmly believes that sustainability should be central to all business practices, emphasising the importance of protecting the environment, which fits perfectly with Ugbrooke House and Gardens values.

As a new artist, Brendan finds immense gratification in transforming discarded wood into objects that encapsulate the essence of nature. Since starting in 2019, Brendan has been featured in the National Press, worked on CH4’s Good with Wood proof of concept, and will also be showing sculptures at Glastonbury Festival this year. www.zenwooddesign.co.uk

Ugbrooke House & Gardens are delighted to be adding the work of another talented artist to this year’s sculpture trail.

Josh Quant

Josh Quant is a local farmer who started making sculptures by accident after he made a life-sized ram out of recycled horseshoes, to raise money for Cancer Research and the Devon Air Ambulance. The ram sold for £1500 at auction, which led to commissions for various items, from sculptures to boot racks, and it has grown from there.

Made from recycled scrap metal and old horseshoes, Josh has created a life-size stag and a number of smaller pieces specially for our sculpture trail. We are excited to collaborate and showcase the work of this talented local artist.

You can check out his creations on Instagram @jquantsculptures

The sculpture trail will be available to view at Ugbrooke House and Gardens, Monday to Thursday from 9th June to 31st July. Opening hours are 11am – 4.30pm (last admission 3.30pm).

Past Events

Ugbrooke House & Gardens are delighted to be hosting a Fundraising Fun Day on Sunday 27th April from 11am to 4pm for Cancer Lifeline South West (CLSW).

“Cancer Lifeline South West provides an incredible lifeline through their therapeutic retreats for those living with and beyond cancer. We’re honoured to offer Ugbrooke as a venue to help them raise vital funds for this important work.”

The event will take place in the beautiful grounds of Ugbrooke House, near Newton Abbot, and promises a packed programme of activities for all ages, including live music, sports lessons, food stalls, prize draw and dog show. There will be plenty of fun for all the family!

Since its founding in 2002, CLSW has provided therapeutic ‘Time to Retune’ breaks for people who have completed cancer treatment, along with their primary carers. These breaks offer much-needed opportunity to process their experience and start looking to the future. This support is provided free of charge, and with no public funding, so the charity relies on fundraising, sponsorship, and donations.

Visitors to the Family Fun Day can look forward to live music, an entertaining dog show, exciting sports demonstrations, and taster sessions, along with plenty of surprises throughout the day. Taking place at the end of the Easter holidays and the start of the spring and summer season, the event is expected to attract guests from across the south west.

“One in two of us will be diagnosed with cancer in our lifetime, and almost everyone knows someone who has been impacted by it,” said Donna Cook, Chair of Trustees. “The feedback we receive shows how valuable these breaks are for attendees, as well as for their families, friends, and colleagues. We hope this Family Fun Day will help us raise much-needed funds to continue offering this vital service.”

The charity is thrilled that Alexander and Lucy Clifford have donated the grounds of Ugbrooke House for the day, and that Newton Abbot Rotary Club will be managing the car parking. Trustee and event organiser Kate McCormick said, “We are incredibly grateful for the generosity of our partners and the community. Organising an event like this takes a lot of hard work, but we know it will be worth it when we see families coming together and having fun. Now we just need the sunshine to make it even more special.”

Entry to the event will be just £5 for adults and under-16s go free, providing they are accompanied by an adult. Some of the activities will incur additional charges, but others will be free. And you can wander around the grounds, hopefully enjoying the late-spring sunshine.
