Do you know the history of 𝐀𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐨𝐨𝐧 𝐓𝐞𝐚 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤? 🫖 🍰

Afternoon tea began in early 19th century England, and it is said that this is largely thanks to Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford.

During that time, it was common for people to have just two main meals a day—breakfast and a late dinner. To satisfy hunger during the long hours between meals, a custom emerged of enjoying a pot of tea along with a light snack of bread and butter, often in the mid-afternoon.

This practice quickly gained popularity, turning afternoon tea into a fashionable social event within high society. Aristocrats and hostesses embraced the occasion, using it as an opportunity to display their finest china and silverware, as well as their culinary skills.

The tradition soon evolved to include an array of delicacies, such as scones with clotted cream and jam, small sandwiches, and various pastries and cakes, all accompanied by carefully selected teas.

🎟️ And if you’re a Chudleigh resident, today’s the LAST DAY to receive your 50% DISCOUNT on House & Gardens or Grounds only tickets.

⏰ There’s still plenty of time to make your way over to us... our gates are open between 11:00 am and 4:30 pm, and tickets must be purchased in person at the ticket office (on a first-come, first-served basis for tours).

There are two tours per day. The first tour starts at 12:30 pm and then again at 2:15 pm (a maximum of 25 people per tour).
