The Estate at Ugbrooke has a history covering 900 years although many changes have occurred over the centuries. Before the Reformation the land belonged to the Church and the house was occupied by Precentors to the Bishop of Exeter. For the past 400 years, Ugbrooke has been home to the Lords Clifford of Chudleigh and is the present Clifford family's private residence.

Robert Adam was commissioned to remodel the house around the time Capability Brown was landscaping the park. Outstanding Adam features remain, including the Chapel and Library wing. The House contains fascinating and rare insights into the family's history with a fine collection of paintings, military paraphernalia, exquisite furnishings, tapestries and needlework, furniture and porcelain.

The welcoming entrance hall is decorated with antique weaponry and a 17th century Brussels tapestry.

Sympathetic restoration of the main dining-room, with its fine collection of paintings, illustrates Lady Clifford's interior design skills.

Exquisite window and bed hangings, with detail (right) of hand embroidery by the Duchess of Norfolk 300 years ago, which adorn the lovely Norfolk Room.
The Duchess and the 3rd Lady Clifford were sisters.

Mass has been said in the stunning St Cyprian's Chapel continually since 1673.
